At a September 30th 2004 meeting of the Board of Directors of the Shubert Organization, it was announced that the Royale will become the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre and the Plymouth will become the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.

According to several Board members,“Jerry and Bernie came at a crucial moment in the history of the Shubert Organization. They reinvented the organization and set a standard of excellence for the industry. They used the resources of the company to nurture the artistic community of the theatre. AND they played leading roles in the rennaissance of Times Square contributing to the vitality of Broadway.”

Gerald Schoenfeld has been chairman of the Shubert Organization since 1972, while Bernard Jacobs was president of the organization from 1972 until his death in 1996.

Philip J. Smith, Shubert president, will conduct a dedication ceremony in Shubert Alley in the spring of 2005.

Theatre People

Honoree Gerald Schoenfeld is presented with the 2003 NYSAE / Actors Fund of America Humanitarian of the Year Award, at the Parade of Stars celebration, by David Belden, NYSAE Chairman and Executive Director of the United Engineering Foundation.

Gerald Schoenfeld, Chairman of the Board of the Shubert Organization has played a key role in the history and development of the American theater, overseeing the production of countless classic plays, musicals and other dramatic productions.

For the past 30 years, he has been at the helm of the largest and most powerful theater company on Broadway. The Shubert Organization owns 17 theaters in New York, and under his direction was the first theater owner to invest in and present shows to fill its theaters, a practice now commonplace on Broadway.

As Chairman of the Mayor’s Midtown Citizens Committee he has been active in the continuing effort to revitalize the theater district. He is vice president of the League of American Theatres and Producers, and a member of its Board of Governors. He also serves on the Board of the NYC&Company Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Mr Schoenfeld continues to give leadership as an organizer and catalyst for a viable and dynamic Broadway, Times Square and New York.

100 Years of American Theater

Entrepreneurs and impresarios, the Shubert Brothers (Sam, Lee, and J.J.) produced some 600 plays, revues, and musicals and championed stars Sarah Bernhardt, Ethel Barrymore, Al Jolson, Mae West and many more. But their greatest legacy was the theaters that they owned.
Focusing on the 17 Broadway houses owned by The Shubert Organization, this new elegant book presents a unique pageant of the past 100 years on the American stage. Irresistible to any theater lover, this beautiful edition features 430 illustrations, including 200 in full color.
