Acupuncture

In 1971, while in Beijing, James Reston, New York Times reporter, suffered from an attack of appendicitis and was treated successfully with acupuncture for post-surgical pain. In a front page Times story, he wrote glowingly of the benefits of acupuncture. Since then acupuncture has become an accepted form of treatment in the United States.

In 1997, an advisory panel for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) evaluated hundreds of acupuncture studies and concluded that the therapy is an effective treatment for postoperative pain after dental surgery and for nausea induced by chemotherapy, pregnancy ("morning sickness"), and anesthesia.

In one study, researchers using brain scans discovered that acupuncture can alter blood circulation within the brain, increasing the blood flow to the thalamus, the area of the brain that relays pain and other sensory messages.

The NIH panel also called acupuncture a useful adjunct and acceptable treatment for a variety of conditions, including fibromyalgia, stroke rehabilitation, asthma, headache and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Approximately 15 needles enter the skin with little resistance. They may be left in approximately 30 minutes and the doctor may send a weak electrical current through them to increase the energy flow.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest healthcare systems in the world. It has evolved from over 3,000 years of study, observation and treatment of Qi ("chee"), the energy life form running through the pathways in our bodies. This network of invisible energy pathways connect your organs, cells, bones, etc.in your body. and are known as meridans/channels. Each channel is connected to an organ. Qi flows along these channels supplying life energy to every cell.

The functions of the meridians are to transport Qi("chee") and blood and circulate yin and yang to nourish your body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), your body has 12 major meridians, each corresponding to a different organ. Acupuncture stimulates the flow of Qi ("chee") in the meridians so that your organs work in harmony and you remain healthy. When the flow of Qi is blocked there is dis-ease and the doctor must diagnose these disharmonies before prescribing treatment in Oriental medicine. TCM is concerned with the total person not only with that person's symptoms.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can dramatically help to increase the chances of a woman becoming pregnant. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help bring the body into balance, creating a physical and emotional environment, for a healthy pregnancy. Acupuncture helps to improve functioning when very fine disposable needles are inserted into precise, specific acupuncture points. Each point or combination of points have a theraputic function in treating various disorders in the body.

Acupuncture can help stimulate egg production in women who can't or don't want to use fertility medications to become pregnant. Chinese herbs are used to restore balance and promote the body's ability to heal and recover from illness. Chinese herbs play an important role in the treatment of infertility and recurrent miscarriage.

Letters From Grateful Patients

Thank you, Dr. Lu,

It was a pleasure talking with you last week about my acupuncture and herbal treatments in 2001, and about the article in yesterday's New York Times February 8, 2004 by Anemona Hartocollis about infertility. I hope the article brings you new and deserved professional recognition for your contribution to treating infertility.

My hope in being interviewed about my story was that other women would see it and consider pursuing alternative treatments, rather than rushing into a fertility clinic without exploring all possible options. As promised, here is a new picture of Ethan, who was 2 years old last October. He is in characteristic mode, playing with his train set. We feel like the luckiest people in the world to have him. Thank you so much. A.W.

Thank you, Dr. Lu,

After three failed previous attempts at IVF, I turned to you for assistance. I am pleased to report that the IVF cycle which included your acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatments was a success. My twins, Mathew and Emma, were born on May 16, 2003. They are both very healthy. They weighed 7 lbs, 2 oz and 6 lbs. 1 oz. at birth.

Once again, thank you for your expertise and assistance. L.K.

Thank you, Dr. Lu,

Here is our wonderful little girl who is bringing us so much love and joy. She is very healthy and happy, a very outgoing and lovely child. Imagine that such a bad tasting medicine can have such a good result. M.H.
